Aluma

What is it?

Aluma is a radiofrequency device that tightens and smoothes lax skin—a kind of “non-surgical facelift.” Developed and marketed by Lumenis of Santa Clara, CA, it uses a specially designed hand piece that gently suctions up folds of skin to ensure that the radiofrequency energy is delivered deep into the targeted areas. The heat from the energy causes collagen—the protein that gives skin its structure—to contract, thus tightening the skin.

What Aluma repairs?

Aluma has received the Food and Drug Administration’s approval to smooth and tighten wrinkles and other folds (rhytids) of the skin. It’s used to treat many areas of the body, including the face, hands, abdomen, thighs, and buttocks.

For best results, a series of 6-8 treatments is usually recommended.

The Aluma Treatment

The procedure is done without any anesthesia, although your physician may recommend a pain medication to minimize discomfort. The Aluma procedure itself takes about 15-30 minutes. You’ll feel a slight tugging sensation as the handpiece vacuums your skin into place and a gentle warmth as it delivers the device’s radiofrequency heat.

Aluma results

Expect some slight reddening of the skin for a day or two. You should avoid direct exposure to sunlight for a few days, but you can return to your normal activities effectively right away. Improvements to your skin will be noticeable immediately, although your skin will become even smoother and tighter as new collagen forms in the weeks following treatment.
