Botox

Botox is a protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It smoothes skin by immobilizing the muscles behind dynamic wrinkles—the ones which are exposed by ordinary, repeated facial movements.

What can Botox treat?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Botox for treating the vertical frown (glabellar) lines between the eyes that can make people look tired or angry. Botox has also received FDA approval for the effective treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the underarms or hands. It is also sometimes used to reduce wrinkles elsewhere on the face or neck, although such treatments are considered “off label.”

It is frequently applied in conjunction with other skin-rejuvenating treatments, particularly laser therapies and dermal fillers, to enhance the final treatment results.

The Botox Treatment Process

Very small amounts of Botox are injected directly into the targeted muscles. A tiny needle is used. Each muscle receives one to three injections. Most people report that the injections feel like mosquito bites.

What you can expect

You’ll see tiny red marks on your skin at the site of the injections; these usually disappear within an hour. You may experience some bruising for a day or two as well. Sometimes, too much Botox is injected, resulting in the muscle becoming over-immobilized. Fortunately, this effect is only temporary.

You’ll begin to notice results—your wrinkles smoothing out—within a day or so. The improvements may last up to 4 months. Your physician will advise you on how often to repeat the treatments.
