Collagen Injections & Fillers

What do they treat?

Fillers that contain collagen—the protein that comprises up to 80 percent of the skin, giving it both its shape and fullness—are sometimes used to help minimize facial wrinkles, especially “frown” lines on the forehead, “crow’s feet” around the eyes, and the deep “smile” lines that run from the nose to the edges of the mouth. These fillers are also used to smooth the indentions caused by scars.

Two Types: Human and Bovine

Some collagen fillers consist of bioengineered human collagen (CosmoDerm and Cosmoplast); others are derived from purified bovine (cow) collagen (Zyderm and Zyplast). Both types are safe and effective, although if you have an autoimmune disease or are a woman who is pregnant or nursing, you should avoid these treatments. People with milk allergies should not be treated with bovine collagen.

Treatment Process

Before you receive bovine collagen injections, you’ll be given a test to make sure you’re not allergic to the substances in them. The test is not needed for the human collagen fillers.

For the treatment itself, you’ll receive a local anesthesia to numb the treatment area. Using a fine needle, your physician will inject the collagen at several points within the area being treated. You’ll feel a slight stinging or burning sensation as the collagen is injected.

What you can expect

After treatment, you may experience some minor pain, which can usually be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medications. You may also experience some minor swelling and bruising for a few days.

You should notice improvements—more subdued wrinkles—immediately, although the treatment’s effects will become most evidence several days later. Results typically last for 2-3 months
