Dermal Fillers And Injectables

Dermal fillers and injectables—substances used to smooth out wrinkles, scars and other depressions in the skin and to “plump up” skin thinned by age and repeated sun exposure—have exploded in popularity in recent years. And with good reason.

These products rejuvenate skin in remarkable ways, making the people who receive the treatments look years younger.

Many exciting options

A wide variety of safe and effective dermal filler products are available. Currently, the most popular are those that contain hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar that attracts water, thus contributing to skin’s fullness. Fillers containing hyaluronic acid include Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane. Two other new-on-the-scene, long-lasting fillers are Sculptra (main ingredient: poly-L-lactic acid) and Radiesse (main ingredient: calcium hydroxylapatatite). All of these products are biocompatible, which means the body accepts them readily. No allergy testing is required.

Older fillers still in use include collagen fillers (such as Cosmodern and Cosmoplast) and those that are created out of the patient’s own excess body fat (fat fillers).

Botox injections also remain exceedingly popular for temporarily erasing unsightly facial lines

The right choice?

Which dermal filler or injectable should you choose? That decision depends on many factors specific to you: the area of your skin you want treated, your age, your skin type, your health history, the product’s potential side-effects, and how long you want the treatment to last.

Talk with your physician to discuss all these factors and ensure that you make the choice that’s right for you and your skin.
