Fat Fillers

To treat facial wrinkles, physicians sometimes use extracted fat from the patient’s own abdomen, thighs, or buttocks. This process is called autologous fat transplantation. Because it’s your own fat, you can be assured that your body will not have an allergic reaction to the filler.

How are fat fillers used?

Fat fillers are most commonly used to enhance the cheeks or to minimize "smile" (nasolabial) lines, the deep folds that run from the nose to either side of the lips. They’re also popular for making lips appear fuller.

The fat fillers treatment

The procedure, which can take 30 to 90 minutes, is done under local anesthesia. Your physician will harvest the fat with a syringe or thin, hollow tube (cannula) attached to a vacuum device. After being processed and purified, the fat will then be injected (with tiny needles) into the targeted treatment areas on your face.

What you can expect

After treatment you’ll experience some redness and swelling that may last for several weeks. Results—smoother skin or fuller cheeks or lips—vary, but tend to last 3-6 months, until the fat is absorbed back into your body.
