Energy And Laser Skin Rejuvenation Treatments

One of the most significant advances in skin rejuvenation treatments has been the development of laser, radiofrequency therapy, and other energy-based technologies. They pinpoint and destroy cells in a specific targeted area of the skin without harming healthy cells nearby.

These new technologies have truly revolutionized our ability to safely revitalize age- and sun-damaged skin

What they do for the skin

Laser skin rejuvenation and other energy-based treatments can improve a wide variety of skin problems: fine lines and wrinkles; age spots, birthmarks, and other pigmented lesions; visible blood vessels (spider veins); and enlarged pores. They’re also used to treat acne and to remove tattoos and unwanted hair. Certain procedures—most notably, fractional laser resurfacing (Fraxel and Affirm) and radiofrequency therapy (Thermage)—can even help lift and tighten sagging skin.

How Lasers Work

These treatments use heat caused by a light beam or radiofrequency to destroy the targeted cells and stimulate the development of new, healthy cells in their place. Ablative lasers vaporize (ablate) cells in the skin’s top layer, or epidermis. Non-ablative lasers work without causing injury to the epidermis. Radiofrequency devices also target the dermis, although with the heat from pulses of radiofrequency energy rather than light.

All these treatments stimulate the growth of collagen, the protein that keeps skin resistant to wrinkling and sagging.
