| A huge array of creams, lotions, and other skin-care products are now being marketed for the prevention and restoration of age- and sun-damaged skin. These products are not all alike, however. Be sure you choose products that are medically directed—those backed by science, not hype. Most such products don’t require a prescription, but they do need a physician’s guidance. Often the best products are found only through a physician. | | SunscreensEvery face needs a sunscreen—daily. The sun is the main cause of wrinkles, brown spots, spider veins, and other symptoms we associate with aging skin. It’s never too late to protect your skin from the sun. Be sure to choose a sunscreen that shields your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet A and B rays. If you’ll be sweating or in the water a lot, choose one that is sweat- and water-resistant. Sunscreens that contain zinc oxide offer the best protection. ExfoliantsThese products remove the layer of dead cells (stratum corneum) that builds up on the skin’s surface and makes it appear dull and unhealthy. Medically directed exfoliants contain ingredients that are gentle to the skin and uniform in size, thus ensuring an effective but non-damaging “scrub.” MoisturizersYour skin becomes drier with age. So even if you didn’t need a moisturizer when you were younger, you need one as you grow older. Moisturizers hydrate the skin’s top layer (epidermis), greatly improving its texture. To avoid breakouts and other skin problems, use a hypoallergenic moisturizer designed specifically for your skin type. AHA ProductsProducts containing alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) have been shown to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, shrink pores, and give skin a more even, healthier appearance. AHA products available through your physician contain higher amounts of active ingredients—and thus are much more effective—than those you can buy over-the-counter. AntioxidantsThe ability of skin care products containing antioxidants (such as vitamin C and vitamin E) to prevent environmental toxins from damaging skin remains unproven. Some evidence suggests, however, that these products may be helpful in reducing the inflammation caused by such toxins, thus preventing skin from aging prematurely. | |
