| Thermage, which is manufactured by the Solta of Hayward, CA, improves your skin’s tone, texture, and contour by altering collagen, the protein that gives skin its underlying structure. | | How is Thermage different?Thermage is not a laser procedure. It uses radiofrequency energy rather than pulses of light to heat the collagen, a process that immediately tightens the skin. The heat also stimulates the growth of new collagen, thus causing the skin to continue tightening over many weeks and months. What Thermage repairsThe Food and Drug Administration has approved Thermage for the treatment of wrinkles and other creases or folds (rhytids) in the skin. The procedure can be used on most areas of the body, including the face, hands, tummy, thighs, and buttocks. The results tend to be most pronounced for people under the age of 60—before skin has become too lax. Only one treatment session is usually required to achieve desirable results, though your physician will discuss the proper regimen with you. The TreatmentNo anesthesia is needed, although your physician may give you a pain medication to minimize any discomfort. The Thermage procedure can take from 20 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how much of your body is being treated. During the treatment, you’ll feel a slight sensation of heat as the radiofrequency energy goes to work tightening your skin. Thermage results Your skin may appear slightly red and swollen for a day or two after treatment. You should protect your skin from the sun during this time, but otherwise, you can return immediately to your regular daily activities. You’ll be able to see tightening and other improvements to your skin right away, although the greatest results won’t appear for several weeks—after new collagen forms and gives your skin a fuller, smoother, and more youthful shape. | |
